TIME MIRROR

Time Mirror is an interactive kaleidoscope that allows audiences of all ages to experience and capture their surroundings in an abstract way.

Commission

Di created Time Mirror as one of six artworks commissioned by Lakes Ignite 2018 to celebrate the Lake District becoming a UNESCO world heritage site. Originally sited at Blackwell Arts and Crafts House overlooking Lake Windermere, Time Mirror moved to Grizedale Sculpture Park in Autumn 2019.

Experience

Time Mirror allows audiences of all ages to experience and capture the surrounding landscape in an experimental way. Time Mirror is ‘Blackwell Blue’ inspired by the blue peacock frieze and tiles inside Blackwell House where it was first commissioned. Participants rotate the device to animate the panorama and create their own unique experience. As they peer through the viewfinder, the abstracted, transient landscape can be captured using a mobile phone or camera.

Time Mirror is a large tessellated funnel-shaped structure. The exterior of the funnel is robust and water-resistant, fashioned out of colourful powder-coated steel that pops from the surrounding landscape, and its interior is fashioned out of polished metal that behaves like a mirror.  The funnel can spin 360 degrees to reflect the landscape.  The six kaleidoscopic viewfinders point in different directions to capture different elements of the panorama.  Two reflect the ground, another pair see the middle distance, and the final two mirror clouds in the sky or the stars at night.

I call the piece Time Mirror because I see it as a visual time machine, shifting and reconfiguring this ancient landscape of the Lake District in the blink of an eye. Time Mirror captures this moment in time in a dream-like way, through abstracted elements of color, texture, landscape, and portrait – in the same way, memory provides the essence of an experience rather than an exact replica of what happened.
