WHIMSICHORD

Barbican, London, UK

A wearable interactive sound installation and performance at the Barbican.

Commission

Di was commissioned by the Barbican’s Digital Weekender, supported by Queen Mary University of London. Whimsichord was a major research project in collaboration with sound designer Dave Meckin that culminated in a performance at the Barbican in 2012.

Performance

For Whimischord, Di designed wearable-sculptures that seamlessly connected to the body, playfully transforming physical movement into sound. Modules that could attach to the body were connected to wall-mounted landing pads via a retractable string. This meant that a performing “movician” could interact and create sound by attaching the module to themselves and moving around, becoming a human string instrument. When the string moved back and forth, sound was created. Each module had its own character which was signified through the sounds it made. These characters were developed through workshops with the movicians.
