As part of the Vote 100 Centenary celebrations in 2018 interactive artist and filmmaker Di Mainstone and musician and producer Mandy Wigby and founded D.N.W. (Deeds Not Words) as a way to explore narratives of the Suffragettes through experimental music, costume, props, and short film.
To begin with, we made two short films using our own resources and passion for film, music and performance. As our films picked up attention on social media, we were awarded funding to produce, film and edit a third D.N.W. short film which was commissioned by cultural producer and musician Bishi as part of the WITCiH festival funded by Arts Council England. We successfully made this film within budget and on time for its screening at a WITCiH event in Bristol in 2019. Our first three D.N.W. films were screened at Home Cinema Manchester in 2019 as part of the Women in Global Cinema Series. And our most recent film Suffrajitsu was funded by British Council supported by BFI and Sensoria Festival.
